Kristen Kelly Leather Goods: Crafting Beauty from Resilience

Jessie Virga

In the heart of creativity and craftsmanship lies a story of transformation and passion. This week, our Small Business of the Week spotlight shines on Kristen Kelly Leather Goods (KKLG), a marquage painting business that breathes new life into luxury designer pieces. At the helm of this unique venture is Kristen Kelly, an Army Veteran turned marquage painter, whose journey from military service to entrepreneurial success is nothing short of inspiring.

The Birth of a Unique Craft

Kristen's journey into the world of luxury item restoration began in an unexpected way. After her military service, where she served as a 68E Dental Tech and later as a Physical Training instructor, Kristen found herself battling to regain her footing in civilian life. It was during this period of sobriety and self-discovery that she stumbled upon her passion. A sneaker enthusiast at heart, Kristen was captivated by a painted Louis Vuitton bag and thought, "I can do this too... [and better]." But she knew it would take more than just raw talent; it would require dedication and skill.

Starting with non-name brands, Kristen taught herself the art of airbrushing and restoration. She began purchasing worn leather goods from eBay, restoring them to their former glory. Her work, initially a part-time endeavor, soon caught the attention of admirers, leading to her first commissioned piece. With the unwavering support of her husband and family, Kristen transformed her parents' den into a studio, marking the beginning of KKLG.

A Service of Passion and Precision

KKLG stands out not just for its unique service but for the personal touch and meticulous care Kristen puts into each piece. Specializing in custom painting, KKLG operates on a reservation-only basis, often booked a year in advance. Kristen's process is thorough and personalized. Clients start by paying a deposit and filling out a detailed questionnaire about their product, budget, and design preferences. Prices start at $350, varying based on the project's complexity. After receiving a mockup and an itemized price quote, clients send in their items for a transformation that takes about 10-12 weeks.

For those who can't wait, KKLG also offers a selection of pre-customized products available for purchase on their website.

A Story of Resilience and Artistry

Kristen's story is more than just a business narrative; it's a tale of resilience, passion, and the power of support. From her days in the Army to her journey through sobriety and self-taught artistry, Kristen embodies the spirit of determination and creativity. Her work is not just about restoring luxury items; it's about infusing them with new life, stories, and a piece of her journey.

ENHQ would like to take a moment to recognize Mike Mahoney, Kristen's husband. She shared with us his unwavering support for her and for that the community thanks you. As veterans, it is sometimes difficult to find support in our civilian life, so when we do it's important to recognize that simple, yet impactful, act.
